You need to create a good foundation before starting your program

Defining What The Problem Is

The first step is to Define what the problem is.  A good problem definition will contain specific, measurable, and time bound information.  Since everyone’s reactions to stress are caused by the release of stress hormones in the body, the problem definition can be written as:  “I perceive events occurring each day as significant problems to cause my body to react and release stress hormones causing my blood pressure to increase, my muscles to tighten up and my body to ache.”

If we look at our definition, it is specific in stating the perception of events as our problem.  It also includes a statement as to how we can measure the events by increased blood pressure, tightening of muscles, and body aches.   Finally, it expresses how often these events occur, which is daily.

As stated earlier, stress affects everyone differently and your problem definition may be slightly different.  Just remember to break down the problem definition you write for yourself to include the specific, measurable, and occurrence parts of the problem.

In a business setting, this problem definition is important to ensure the improvement project remains on track and is able to meet the overall goals.  This still holds true for looking at resolving personal problems as well.  If you don’t have a clear understanding of what the problem is, you will have difficulty in meeting your goals or objectives.

Once you have your problem defined, you will need to look at what you believe you can accomplish.  This is the point in which you set your goals or expectations for this program.  When setting goal, they need to realistic.  Only you know what you are willing to accomplish.  If you set a goal that says you will never allow anything to cause you stress in the future, then you’re destined to fail.  You can not prevent stress from entering your life, you only have the ability to determine how strongly you will react to the stressor.

Once you have  your problem defined and realistic and attainable goals set, you are ready to begin the Measure Stage of the Six Sigma process.

Ever feel stuck inside a box?

Writing a Clear Problem Definition

When writing your problem definition you need to make sure that you are able to identify as many of the stress symptoms as possible.

In the definition example given, we only presented three symptoms (blood pressure increase, muscles tighten, and body aches).  This was done purely as an example.

Everyone’s body will react to stress in different way and your symptoms will be different.  The one thing you don’t want to do is to identify more than 10 symptoms.  If you have more than this, you might want to seek professional assistance.  Since the more symptoms you monitor, the more difficult the analysis will be later.
